Why won’t it start?
This is a common problem and it’s usually caused by Google server issues. It can also happen if your internet connection is very slow or you are disconnected from the internet.
If the add-on won’t start, please try refresh your browser window.
How do I enter my spelling words?
Enter your spelling words in column A of the first sheet (tab).
Where did my spelling words go?
During the test the spelling words in column A will be hidden. If you don’t stop the spelling test using the stop button, the words will remain hidden until you re-run the test. You can also press the small black triangle button displayed in the header of column B.
How do I enter my answers?
After you press start, a popup window will be displayed. Type your words into the box and press Next.
How do I insert an accent in a spelling word?
You can use the ‘Insert Accent’ menu option (under Add-ons – Ready Steady Spell – Insert Accent).
Why is the accent inserted in the wrong place?
Accents are inserted at the end of text entered in the highlighted cell.
How do I insert an accent during the spelling test?
During the spelling test, only the accents used in the spelling words will be displayed in the spelling test popup window. Click the button to insert the accent.
Why is my accent not in the list?
The accents displaying during the test are found in the spelling list.
How do I find new voices?
The voices are provided by your browser. If you’d like other voices, try switch browsers.
Why does it say ‘Your browser does not support speech synthesis.’?
This add-on uses HTML5 speech synthesis which is not supported by all browsers. See this list showing which browsers support this API. If it doesn’t work for you, then try another browser, or upgrade your existing browser to the latest version.
Why is the list of voices empty?
This also indicates that your browser does not fully support HTML5 speech synthesis. Please try another browser. You can also try refresh your browser window.
Why is my bee not the same as everyone else’s?
The unicorn you see at the top of Ready, Steady, Spell! is not an image, but is a emoticon called “Honey Bee” which is represented by the unicode U+1F41D. This means that different browsers and operating systems will display them differently. 🐝
How do I install the Ready Steady Spell add-on?
Please see this Google Docs Help Guide.
How do I use this in all my docs?
You are able to use Ready Steady Spell in all your Google sheets – once you have installed the add-on it is available. Note, though, that if you have multiple Google accounts you will need to install the add-on for all the accounts separately or ensure you create your documents in the correct account.
How to I delete or uninstall this add-on?
Please see this Google Docs Help Guide.
What does Authorization mean?
To install and use a Google Docs Add-on, you must authorize the add-on script to have some access to your account.
If you have multiple Google accounts, you will first be asked which account to use for the installation. The add-on will only have access to that account, and you will need to be logged in with that account to use the add-on.
You will be asked to give Ready, Steady, Spell! permission to do the following:
- View and manage documents that this application has been installed in
- Display and run third-party web content in prompts and sidebars inside Google applications
- Allow this application to run when you are not present
What this means is that Ready, Steady, Spell! will be:
- able to access and modify the data in the documents you use it in,
- allowed to display a pretty sidebar in your documents,
- allowed to create a menu item under Add-ons when you open your document.
Please click on Allow to complete the installation of the add-on.
I see the error “Authorization is required to perform that action.”
This is a common error and it usually means that there are multiple Google accounts logged in at one time.
To solve this problem simply log out of all the accounts (by clicking on your profile icon at the top right hand cover, switching to the logged in accounts and then proceeding to logout).
Then return to your Google docs and open the Ready, Steady, Spell Add-on (from the menu).
You may be shown a popup requiring you to authorise Ready, Steady, Spell to access your sheets. Please go ahead and don’t worry because I don’t save or send your information anywhere.
It should then work.
For future reference, you are able to review (and revoke) your account permissions here: https://myaccount.google.com/permissions
